OHIO STAR BLOCK

Most beginner quilters start out with the basic 9 block pattern.  The Ohio Star quilt block is a nine-patch block made with five plain squares and four quarter-square triangle units. It's a classic block that's easy to make. The colors can be solids, solids and prints, the creativity is endless.  Being from Ohio, I had to have this pattern on my site. It is the "Official Quilt Block of Ohio"

I will explain making the pattern in simple terms, using basic sewing skills. This way a true beginner can make this block and be on their way to making a beautiful quilt top. This pattern will make One 12 inch Block.

Material needed:
We are using two colors in the pattern, any colors will do, we are using Blue and White for this demonstration.

Blue Material
one 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" square for block center
two 5-1/4" x 5-1/4" squares to make quarter-square triangle units

White Material
four 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" for block corners
two 5-1/4" x 5-1/4" squares to make quarter-square triangle units

Quarter-square triangle units and just that, a square quartered.

Ok, lets begin....

Set the 4 1/2" squares off to the side for now.

Cut each 5 1/4" square in half on the diagonal.
Cut each triangle in half on the diagonal.

This should give you
8 blue quarter triangle pieces
8 white quarter triangle pieces

When sewing pieces together it is normally the standard to have a 1/4 seam.

Sew your blue and white triangle pieces together
This way it is easier to get the nice crisp lines.

You should now have 4 quarter squares, each
should measure 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"

Your 4 white squares and, 1 blue square.

This makes up you 9 square quilt block.

Now take your 4 1/2" squares and sew them to
your quarter squares as shown in the diagram.

Now sew the three strips of material you have left as
shown in the diagram. You should have a completed
12 1/2" Ohio Star Block in front of you.

After sewing the square to the attaching strips you
will have a 12" square

The more you make, the easier they become.
