Basic 9 Square Block

Every journey starts with the first step. Here is your first step into the world of quilting.  This is also a beginner's level quilt block, this is the basic square that starts every quilt. The square just gets you introduced in the art of quilting, most patterns start with the 9 square block.  The variations of the pattern are changed with different cuts.

Ok, lets begin....

Material needed:
We are using two colors in the pattern, any colors will do, we are using Blue and White for this demonstration. You can make your quilt more colorful, or as basic as you want.

Blue Material
five 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" square for block center

White Material
four 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" for block corners

When making a 12" block, why have 4 1/2" squares?

We cut the squares 4 1/2" because we always try to use the standard 1/4" seams on the sewing. When sewing four sides of your square you will end up with a 12" block

We take the squares and sew three squares together as shown.
This gives you three strips of fabric. Make sure the strips are exact same size, this will make the block square.

The final step, you guessed it, sew the three strips together to form your block.
You should now have a 12 1/2" block, when sewing your block to rest of the quilt it will become a 12" block.

You have completed your first 9 square and are on your way to maling beautiful quilts.
The only thing stopping you from creating is your imagination.

This patchwork block is called 9 Square. Although different color variations exist with other names.
